Paperboard Packaging Types

Aseptic Packaging

A package in which sterile contents are filled and sealed into a multi-laminate package under a controlled, sterile environment.

Blister Pack

A thin bubble or dome of semi-rigid plastic attached to a piece of paperboard to form a package.

Carded Packaging
Type of packaging that consists of a stiff paperboard card onto which a product is held by a pre-formed plastic blister. Blister cards are usually covered with a special coating that allows the blister to be heat-sealed to the card.

Contour (or Skin) Packaging

The overwrapping of an irregularly shaped object with a flexible film applied to a paperboard base. The air surrounding the product is exhausted, causing the film to fit or cling closely to all parts of the packaged item.

Folding Carton
Containers made by bending grades of plain or printed boxboard, cut and creased in a variety of sizes and shapes. Folding cartons are delivered to the user in a flat, or glued and collapsed form.

Rigid Box

A stiff paperboard box in three dimensional construction, typically fabricated from non-bending chipboard that is overwrapped with printed paper or other covering materials and delivered “set up” and ready to use.

U-Board

A “U”-shaped boxboard configuration of a body and two ends or sides, scored to provide rigidity and facilitate overwrapping of product with flexible packaging material.
